Western Carolina University hosted a grand opening celebration of the new WCU trail system Saturday, Feb. 23. There was a great turnout to enjoy the advent of this addition to the university, despite the overcast day. A group ride was held, there were bike clinics, free food and live music.

The trail system consists of 6.7 miles of single-track trail designed for mountain biking, trail running and hiking. There are two main entrances to the trail: one accessed through the tunnel behind the softball field at the NCCAT building and the other behind the Health and Human Sciences building on Little Savannah Road.

?I am excited to see the community and future students have access to mountain biking trails within close proximity,? said Nick Bragg, WCU Cycling Team president.

The proximity of the trails gives students and faculty the ability to ride in between classes and organize weekly group rides. The WCU Cycling Team has plans to start a weekly Thursday mountain bike ride on the new trails after the time change to augment the existing Tuesday night Motion Makers road bike ride and recreational Wednesday ?Whee Ride?.

?The new WCU trails provide a great opportunity for both the students and the public,? said Nick Lacombe, WCU Cycling Team vice-president. ?Now I can ride my mountain bike on campus after classes instead of driving at least 30 minutes to one of the surrounding trail systems.?

The WCU trail system was the brainchild of Josh Whitmore, associate director of outdoor programs at WCU. The trail system has been in development for several years in terms of planning, but the actual construction of the trail took about one year. It was a collaborative effort between volunteer labor and a professional trail builder. A grant of $75,000 from the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation?s Recreational Trails Program and a $5,000 award from Specialized Bicycles helped in the creation of the trail system. Blue Cross & Blue Shield gave Western Carolina University a $14,440 grant that funded the development in the planning stages of the project.

Where did that Russian meteor come from? Astronomers determine origins.

Relying on the many publicly available videos of the meteor that exploded over Russia's Ural Mountains earlier this month, a pair of Colombian astronomers say that they have calculated the space rock's orbit.

Just a week after a huge fireball streaked across the skies of the Chelyabinsk region of Russia, astronomers published?a paper?that reconstructs the orbit and determines the origins of the space rock that exploded about 14-20 km (8-12.5 miles) above Earth?s surface, producing a shockwave that damaged buildings and broke windows.

Researchers Jorge Zuluaga and Ignacio Ferrin at the University of Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia used a resource not always available in meteorite falls: the numerous dashboard and security cameras that captured the huge fireball. Using the trajectories shown in videos posted on YouTube, the researchers were able to calculate the trajectory of the meteorite as it fell to Earth and use it to reconstruct the orbit in space of the meteoroid before its violent encounter with our planet.

The results are preliminary, Zuluaga told Universe Today, and they are already working on getting more precise results. ?We are working hard to produce an updated and more precise reconstruction of the orbit using different pieces of evidence,? he said via email.

But through their calculations, Zuluaga and Ferrin determined the rock originated from the Apollo class of asteroids.
?
Using triangulation, the researchers used two videos specifically: one from a camera located in the Revolutionary Square in Chelyabinsk and one video recorded in the a nearby city of Korkino, along with the location of a hole in the ice in Lake Chebarkul, 70km west of Chelyabinsk. The hole is thought to have come from the meteorite that fell on February 15.

Zuluaga and Ferrin were inspired to use the videos by Stefen Geens, who writes the?Ogle Earth blog?and who pointed out that the numerous dashcam and security videos may have gathered data about the trajectory and speed of the meteorite. He used this data and Google Earth to reconstruct the path of the rock as it entered the atmosphere and showed that it matched an image of the trajectory taken by the geostationary Meteosat-9 weather satellite.

But due to variations in time and date stamps on several of the videos ? some which differed by several minutes ? they decided to choose two videos from different locations that seemed to be the most reliable.

From triangulation, they were able to determine height, speed and position of the meteorite as it fell to Earth.

This video is a virtual exploration of the preliminary orbit computed by Zuluaga & Ferrin

This is a virtual exploration of th epreliminary orbit computed by Zuluaga & Ferrin (2013). Scientific details can be found at arxiv:1302.5377

But figuring out the meteroid?s orbit around the Sun was more difficult as well as less precise. They needed six critical parameters, all which they had to estimate from the data using Monte Carlo methods to ?calculate the most probable orbital parameters and their dispersion,? they wrote in their paper. Most of the parameters are related to the ?brightening point? ? where the meteorite becomes bright enough to cast a noticeable shadow in the videos. This helped determine the meteorite?s height, elevation and azimuth at the brightening point as well as the longitude, latitude on the Earth?s surface below and also the velocity of the rock.

?According to our estimations, the Chelyabinski meteor started to brighten up when it was between 32 and 47 km up in the atmosphere,? the team wrote. ?The velocity of the body predicted by our analysis was between 13 and 19 km/s (relative to the Earth) which encloses the preferred figure of 18 km/s assumed by other researchers.?

They then used software developed by the US Naval Observatory called NOVAS, the Naval Observatory Vector Astrometry to calculate the likely orbit. They concluded that the Chelyabinsk meteorite is from the Apollo asteroids, a well-known class of rocks that cross Earth?s orbit.

According to?The Technology Review blog, astronomers have seen over 240 Apollo asteroids that are larger than 1 km but believe there must be more than 2,000 others that size.

However, astronomers also estimate there might be about 80 million out there that are about same size as the one that fell over Chelyabinsk: about 15 meters (50 feet) in diameter, with a weight of 7,000 metric tons.

In their ongoing calculations, the research team has decided to make future calculations not using Lake Chebarkul as one of their triangulation points.

?We are acquainted with the skepticism that the holes in the icesheet of the lake have been produced artificially,? Zuluaga told Universe Today via email. ?However I have also read some reports indicating that pieces of the meteoroid have been found in the area. So, we are working hard to produce an updated and more precise reconstruction of the orbit using different pieces of evidence.?

Many have asked why this space rock was not detected before, and Zuluaga said determining why it was missed is one of the goals of their efforts.

?Regretfully knowing the family at which the asteroid belongs is not enough,? he said. ?The question can only be answered having a very precise orbit we can integrate backwards at least 50 years. Once you have an orbit, that orbit can predict the precise position of the body in the sky and then we can look for archive images and see if the asteroid was overlooked. This is our next move!?

Read the team?s paper here.

Samsung announces Android Wallet app for tickets and coupons, opens API to developers

If your heart bleeds Android, but your eyes occasionally wander in the direction of Apple's Passbook, good news. Samsung has announced "Wallet," a ticketing and coupon app of its own. Unveiled at the firm's Developer Day at Mobile World Congress, Wallet comes ready with an open API to encourage adoption, with some big names already onboard including Hotels.com, Booking.com, Expedia, MLB and Lufthansa. Though this isn't the only Android solution we've heard about, in keeping with the norm, the app will be connected, and location aware. As such, the app will let you know when Wallet-friendly stores and so on are nearby, as well as continually send updates to items already stored in the app, should those booking details change. The app API is still in beta at this time, but word is that Samsung is accepting early sign-ups on its approval.

New cars increasingly out of reach for many

Looking to buy a new car, truck or crossover? You may find it more difficult to stretch the household budget than you expected, according to a new study that finds median-income families in only one major U.S. city actually can afford the typical new vehicle.

The typical new vehicle is now more expensive than ever, averaging $30,550 in 2012, according to TrueCar.com data, and heading up again as makers curb the incentives that helped make their products more affordable during the recession when they were desperate for sales.

According to the 2013 Car Affordability Study by Interest.com, only in Washington, D.C., could the typical household swing the payments, the median income there running $86,680 a year. At the other extreme, Tampa was at the bottom of the 25 large cities included in the study, with a median household income of $43,832.

The study looked at a variety of household expenses, such as food and housing, and when it comes to purchasing a new vehicle, it considered more than just the basic purchase price, down payment and monthly note, factoring in such essentials as taxes and insurance.

Bottom line? A buyer in the capital can purchase a car with a sticker price of $31,940, slightly more than the new vehicle average for the 2013 model year and about what it would cost for a mid-range Ford Fusion sedan or a stripped-down BMW X1 crossover. The buyer in Tampa? They?ll just barely cover the cost of a basic Kia Rio, with $14,516 to spend.

More from The Detroit Bureau: Hyundai settles lawsuit for false mileage claims

?If you live in New York City or San Francisco, you?re probably going to have to pay a lot for housing, but you don?t have to pay a lot for a car,? said Mike Sante, the managing editor of Interest.com, a financial decision-making website.

Affordability has been a matter of growing concern for the auto industry in recent years as prices have continued to move upward. Even the most basic of today?s cars are generally loaded with features that were once found on high-line models a few decades back ? if they were available at all ? such as air conditioning, power windows, airbags and electronic stability control, as well as digital infotainment systems. They also have to meet ever tougher federal safety, emissions and mileage standards that have added thousands to the typical price tag.

?The average compact car of today has the features of a midsize model somebody might be trading in ? but it may be just as expensive,? said David Sargent, director of automotive operations for J.D. Power and Associates.

That is one reason why many buyers have been downsizing in recent years, said Bill Fay, general manager of Toyota, though he added that ?there is still a lot of affordability in the marketplace.?

Perhaps, but industry planners have come to recognize that they are targeting a much smaller segment of the American public than in decades past. That?s one reason why most manufacturers are offering more downsized models.

More from The Detroit Bureau: Consumer Reports names its 'Top Picks'

They also are working with their dealers to offer certified pre-owned programs where buyers can stretch their budget by purchasing a two- or three-year-old vehicle that has gone through an extensive inspection and, if necessary, repairs and replacements. Such vehicles may cost slightly more than a conventional used model but usually include a like-new warranty.

While the typical new vehicle will likely nudge up this year, Interest.com editor Sante stressed that car costs are one of the most controllable parts of a household?s budget. ?You?re better off driving something more affordable and saving or investing the difference.?

If the typical new car costs $30,550, with an average monthly payment of $550, the five cities most able to meet ? or come close ? are:

1) Washington, D.C.
Average Household Income: $86,680
Affordable Purchase Price: $31,940
Maximum monthly payment: $628

2) San Francisco
Average Household Income: $71,975
Affordable Purchase Price: $26,786
Maximum monthly payment: $537

3) Boston
Average Household Income: $69.455
Affordable Purchase Price: $26,025
Maximum monthly payment: $507

4) Baltimore
Average Household Income: $65,463
Affordable Purchase Price: $24,079
Maximum monthly payment: $468

5) Minneapolis
Average Household Income: $63,352
Affordable Purchase Price: $24,042
Maximum monthly payment: $470

At the other end of the scale, those five cities least able to handle a car payment are:

21) Phoenix
Average Household Income: $50,058
Affordable Purchase Price: $17,243
Maximum monthly payment: $348

22) San Antonio
Average Household Income: $48,699
Affordable Purchase Price: $17,137
Maximum monthly payment: $334

23) Detroit
Average Household Income: $48,968

The Coen Brothers Get Unbroken

Posted 9:19 PM February 25th, 2013 by Binh Ngo

Considering the kinds of movies Angelina Jolie is known for, the war drama In the Land of Blood and Honey is not something one would expect her to choose to make her directorial debut, but that's exactly what she has done. With a global box office of only $303,877, we can see that not many people went to watch the movie in theaters.

While In the Land of Blood and Honey didn't have any impact in terms of box office performance, the movie has impressed Universal enough that Jolie is entrusted with Unbroken, an adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand's biography about Louis Zamperini who was captured and imprisoned by the Japanese army during WWII. Jolie replaced Francis Lawrence, who left to direct The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

It looks like she'll be given a considerably larger budget to work with this time considering the studio and who got hired to write the screenplay: The Coen Brothers!

That right, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Joel and Ethan Coen have been brought on board to adapt Hillenbrand 2010 book. The Coens took home the Best Screenplay Oscar for Fargo and No Country for Old Men so they're kind of decent at these kind of things. No word if they'll be rewriting William Nicholson and Richard LaGravenese's draft or starting over with a new one.

The Coens' new drama Inside Llewyn Davis is going to be released by CBS Films sometime this year. The movie focuses on a New York folk singer named Llewyn Davis during the '60s.

E.W. Scripps posts higher 4Q earnings, revenue

CINCINNATI (AP) ? The E.W. Scripps Co. reported sharply higher earnings and revenue for the fourth quarter on Tuesday, helped by higher political advertising revenue ahead of the elections last November. The results were also aided by contributions from TV stations the company bought in 2011.

The newspaper publisher and TV station owner earned $27.2 million, or 47 cents per share, in the three months that ended on Dec. 31. That's up from $6.3 million, or 11 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier.

Revenue rose 32 percent to $259.8 million from $197.4 million. FactSet only quotes one analyst estimate for Scripps, which is not enough for consensus measurement. The analyst expected the company to earn 55 cents per share on revenue of $261.1 million.

Scripps owns newspapers such as the Ventura County Star in California and The Commercial Appeal of Memphis, Tenn. Its stations include WCPO in Cincinnati and WPTV in West Palm Beach, Fla.

The financial results include revenue from television stations in Indianapolis, Denver, San Diego and Bakersfield, Calif., all of which the company purchased in 2011. Without the new stations, revenue would have grown 14 percent to $225 million.

Political advertising soared to $56.9 million from $3.5 million a year earlier. Political ad revenue for the quarter was higher than for any previous full year, the company said.

E.W. Scripps' stock fell 90 cents, or 7.9 percent, to $10.45 in morning trading. The stock has traded in a 52-week range of $8.19 and $11.69.

Bob Woodward Wishes Obama Was More Like His Imaginary George W. Bush

Today on MSNBC's Morning Joe, Bob Woodward blasted President Obama's "madness" for letting budget considerations influence military policy, continuing to stumble through his transition from Bush turncoat to Obama hater. It's the latest attack from the Washington Post reporter, following a column late last week charging that the massive cuts from the imminent sequestration are the president's fault?? a charge the administration labelled "willfully wrong."

RELATED: Poll Majority Sees Obama Doing the Same or Worse Than Bush

Today's skirmish stems from an announcement by the Navy earlier this month that the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman wouldn't deploy to the Persian Gulf, citing imminent NBC News notes, the Navy is slated to lose $4 billion by fall due to the cuts, on top of operating at a $4.6 billion deficit due to Congress' failure to enact a new budget for 2013.

RELATED: Some Suggested Small Talk for When Bush Visits the White House

Presumably after having crunched the numbers, Woodward disagrees with that decision.

RELATED: Scott Brown Goes All In on Warren's Cherokee Pa-Paw

RELATED: From Hawks to Doves in Five Days Flat

As transcribed by Politico:

?Can you imagine Ronald Reagan sitting there and saying ?Oh, by the way, I can?t do this because of some budget document??? Woodward said Wednesday on MSNBC?s ?Morning Joe.?

?Or George W. Bush saying, ?You know, I?m not going to invade Iraq because I can?t get the aircraft carriers I need? or even Bill Clinton saying, ?You know, I?m not going to attack Saddam Hussein?s intelligence headquarters,? as he did when Clinton was president because of some budget document?? Woodward added. ?Under the Constitution, the president is commander-in-chief and employs the force. And so we now have the president going out because of this piece of paper and this agreement, I can?t do what I need to do to protect the country. That?s a kind of madness that I haven?t seen in a long time.?

Bush indeed never said, "You know, I?m not going to invade Iraq because I can?t get the aircraft carriers I need." As the Bush administration's primary historian, Woodward should know that Bush's attitude was quite the opposite.

RELATED: Obama Tries Not to Take 'Victory Lap' at Ground Zero

At a 2004 town hall meeting in Kuwait, a soldier asked then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld: "Why do we soldiers have to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to up-armor our vehicles, and why don?t we have those resources readily available to us?" Why, in other words, don't we have the resources we need? Rumsfeld's famous reply:

As you know, you go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time.

The exchange?occurred?shortly after Woodward's laudatory 2004 book Plan of Attack: The Definitive Account of the Decision to Invade Iraq, but well before 2007's heavily critical State of Denial. The latter book seemed to complete Woodward's transition away from being a Bush hagiographer, documenting the "detailed, behind-the-scenes story of how the Bush administration failed to tell the truth about the Iraq War." Perhaps today's comments indicate that the pendulum is swinging back.

Over the weekend, Woodward described how he saw Obama's pick of Chuck Hagel to lead the department of defense.

[Obama and Hagel's shared] worldview is part hawk and part dove. It amounts, in part, to a challenge to the wars of President George W. Bush. It holds that the Afghanistan war has been mismanaged and the Iraq war unnecessary. War is an option, but very much a last resort.

So, this thinking goes, the U.S. role in the world must be carefully scaled back -- this is not a matter of choice but of facing reality; the military needs to be treated with deep skepticism; lots of strategic military and foreign policy thinking is out of date; and quagmires like Afghanistan should be avoided.

Apparently Woodward meant those lines as a critique.

Nestle buys U.S. medical foods firm Pamlab

ZURICH (Reuters) - Nestle has agreed to buy U.S. medical foods company Pamlab, the latest in a string of recent acquisitions as the world's biggest food group expands in health and nutrition.

Nestle Health Science, which was set up in 2011 as the Swiss-based firm seeks to profit from growing demand for medical foods from an ageing population, said it was not disclosing terms of the deal, which is subject to regulatory approval.

Pamlab, which was founded in 1987 and employs over 300 staff, makes medical foods for patients with conditions including diabetic peripheral neuropathy, dementia, depression and high-risk pregnancy.

"Pamlab will particularly strengthen our brain health platform and provide us an additional foothold in metabolic health in the U.S.," Luis Cantarell, head of Nestle Health Science, said in a statement.

Last year, Nestle bought a stake in U.S. firm Accera, which makes a medical food brand for Alzheimer's patients.

It has also acquired U.S. firm Prometheus Laboratories, which makes tests and drugs for inflammatory bowel diseases, and UK-based CM&D Pharma Ltd, which makes a chewing gum for kidney patients.

Budweiser waters down its beer, lawsuit alleges

Beer lovers across the U.S. have accused Anheuser-Busch of watering down its Budweiser, Michelob and other brands, in class-action suits seeking millions in damages.

The suits, filed in Pennsylvania, California and other states, claim consumers have been cheated out of the alcohol content stated on labels. Budweiser and Michelob each boast of being 5 percent alcohol, while some "light" versions are said to be just over 4 percent.

The lawsuits are based on information from former employees at the company's 13 U.S. breweries, some in high-level plant positions, according to lead lawyer Josh Boxer of San Rafael, Calif.

"Our information comes from former employees at Anheuser-Busch, who have informed us that as a matter of corporate practice, all of their products mentioned (in the lawsuit) are watered down," Boxer said. "It's a simple cost-saving measure, and it's very significant."

The excess water is added just before bottling and cuts the stated alcohol content by 3 percent to 8 percent, he said.

Anheuser-Busch InBev called the claims "groundless" and said its beers fully comply with labeling laws.

"Our beers are in full compliance with all alcohol labeling laws. We proudly adhere to the highest standards in brewing our beers, which have made them the best-selling in the U.S. and the world," Peter Kraemer, vice president of brewing and supply, said in a statement.

The suit involves 10 Anheuser-Busch products: Budweiser, Bud Ice, Bud Light Platinum, Michelob, Michelob Ultra, Hurricane High Gravity Lager, King Cobra, Busch Ice, Natural Ice and Bud Light Lime.

Anheuser-Busch, based in St. Louis, Mo., merged with InBev in 2008 to form the world's largest alcohol producer, headquartered in Belgium. In 2011, the company produced 10 billion gallons of malt beverages, 3 billion of them in the U.S., and reported $22 billion in profits from that category, the lawsuit said.

According to the lawsuit, the company has sophisticated equipment that measures the alcohol content throughout the brewing process and is accurate to within one-hundredth of a percent. But after the merger, the company increasingly chose to dilute its popular brands of beer, the lawsuit alleged.

"Following the merger, AB vigorously accelerated the deceptive practices described below, sacrificing the quality products once produced by Anheuser-Busch in order to reduce costs," said the lead lawsuit, filed Friday in federal court in San Francisco on behalf of consumers in the lower 48 states.

Companion suits are being filed this week in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and elsewhere. Each seeks at least $5 million in damages.

The named Pennsylvania plaintiffs, Thomas and Gerald Greenberg of Ambler, said they buy six cases of the affected Anheuser-Busch products a month. They did not immediately return a message Tuesday, and Boxer would not elaborate on their purchases except to say the consumer-protection suit does not involve retailers or bar owners.

One of the California plaintiffs, Nina Giampaoli of Sonoma County, said she bought a six-pack of Budweiser every week for the past four years.

"I think it's wrong for huge corporations to lie to their loyal customers ? I really feel cheated. No matter what the product is, people should be able to rely on the information companies put on their labels," Giampaoli said in a news release issued by Boxer's law firm.

Bloomberg News first reported Tuesday on the lawsuits.

In a telephone interview with The Associated Press, Boxer said he has evidence to corroborate the former employees' allegations, but stopped short of saying the beers had been independently tested.

"AB (Anheuser-Busch) never intends for the malt beverage to possess the amount of alcohol that is stated on the label. As a result, AB's customers are overcharged for watered-down beer and AB is unjustly enriched by the additional volume it can sell," the lawsuit said.

3-D atlas of the human heart drawn using statistics

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Researchers at Pompeu Fabra University (Spain) have created a high resolution atlas of the heart with 3D images taken from 138 people. The study demonstrates that an average image of an organ along with its variations can be obtained for the purposes of comparing individual cases and differentiating healthy forms from pathologies.

"This atlas is a statistical description of how the heart and its components -- such as the ventricles and the atrium -- look," as explained by Corn? Hoogendoorn, researcher at the CISTIB centre of the Pompeu Fabra University.

Scientists from this university have managed to create a representation of the average shape of the heart and its variations with images from 138 fully functioning hearts taken using multislice computed tomography. This technique offers three-dimensional and high resolution X-ray.

"In our analysis the population group included 138 people but it could be applied to much larger populations," comments Hoogendoorn. "We demonstrated the feasibility of constructing this type of atlas using many subjects, with an acceptable level of manual parameter tuning, while still providing good numeric results."

To create this cardiac map the researchers have developed a statistical model capable of managing high quantities of information provided by individual images. It can also collect temporary variations, given that the heart is never motionless.

The level of detail and the possibility to extend the atlas give it "an advantage over the majority of cardiac models present to date." This is the case according to the conclusions of the study, which was published in the 'IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging' journal.

The researchers believe that the study can be applied to medical image processing, especially when segmenting, or in other words, properly differentiating a structure to be analysed from the rest of the image.

"The statistics of the atlas offer a continuous range of exemplary heart shapes, which allows for the comparison of concrete cases as well as the calculation of probabilities of the latter belonging to the modelled population," says Hoogendoorn.

The scientist also outlines that the method can be applied to the images of any other organ or structure. It has the advantage of providing the ability to classify and diagnose healthy shapes and pathologies as well as to differentiate between different illnesses and even establish grading amongst each.

In addition, computational simulations of the heart electrophysiology and mechanics (as well as the mechanics of other organs) can be based on the atlas, which can help to better plan treatment for patients.

This study is one more of others of its kind that highlight the increasing importance of the statistics in biomedical sciences, a mathematic discipline. What is more, 2013 is the International Year of Statistics.

Samsung to introduce 'the next Galaxy' on March 14

"Ready 4 the show," an invitation sent to members of the press teases, blatantly hinting that we'll be seeing the Galaxy S 4 ? the highly anticipated follow-up to the Galaxy S III smartphone ? at the event being held by Samsung on March 14.

The event will take place in New York City at 7 p.m. ET. (We'll be there to cover it live, of course.)

The Galaxy S 4 ? we're assuming by the big "4" that the only change to Samsung's incredibly consistent naming approach will be to drop the Roman numerals ? will be the company's newest flagship device.

A poster spotted by AnandTech's Brian Klug during a visit to Samsung's demo room at the Consumer Electronics Show in early January suggests that the Galaxy S 4 could be rocking a 4.99-inch 1080p screen with a whopping 440 pixels per inch. While the iPhone 5 offers the significantly less dense 326 ppi, it's worth noting that it's practically impossible for human eyes to tell the difference. After a certain point, the individual pixels simply become indistinguishable.

That's about all we know (or think we know) about the Galaxy S 4 for now, so Samsung could have plenty of surprises waiting up its sleeves come March 14.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer Disses Working Moms -- Yet Again | The ...

home officeI actually felt a little bad after I criticized Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer for only taking two weeks of maternity leave. I thought maybe I should have been more supportive of her choice, even if it did send a pretty messed up message. Only now, she's gone and taken away a big choice for her employees, and I don't feel bad at all criticizing her for this one. Because to be blunt -- it sucks. Big time.

Last week, she announced that employees will no longer be permitted to work remotely. All Things D got a hold of the internal memo, which read in part: "Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.?

And with that -- one more big, huge slap in the face of working parents.

Working from home is one of the only ways some working parents can make it work. When work/life balance is already elusive enough, why would she attempt to try and take this away? It sets such a horrible precedent, and it's not only harmful to parents, but to her company who will surely lose valuable talent by not showing flexibility.

More from The Stir:? Sherri Shepherd Has an Inspiring Message for Working Moms (VIDEO)

I worked for a huge software corporation before my son was born. When he came into this world prematurely, my rapid ascent up that ladder came to an abrupt halt as I spent months in the hospital with him and ended up quitting my job because of the care he needed at home. Fortunately, for me, my manager at that time didn't want to lose me and offered me a job working from home. It was a great arrangement for me, and really for the company, who already had a well-trained employee with a great track record. Why let someone like that go just because she can't be in the office?

When we moved across the country, the job had shifted a bit where I needed to be in the office once in awhile, and I couldn't do it from Florida, but I managed to find other jobs that have let me work remotely for the past nine years. If I hadn't, I don't know what I'd be doing or if I'd be working. It certainly would be harder.

I've been fortunate, but I've always been baffled as to why more companies don't allow or even encourage telecommuting. With technology today, there's often no reason not to, and in return you get happier employees who are often as productive, if not more productive, than those who work from the office.

Working from home is no breeze. It takes discipline, focus, and childcare. But it also offers the flexibility that many moms need to make it work. I literally don't have time to take a shower some days until late at night, but that's okay because no one is going to see me sitting here in my home office. Every minute counts in the life of a working mom, and those minutes I would spend primping and prepping to go into an office are instead spent on work. If I had to tack on a commute each way to my job and do all the standard chit chat that goes on when you're around coworkers, I would work fewer hours, plain and simple. When I work at home, I'm heads down focused on my job.

I know a lot of women who work remotely, and we work as hard if not harder than those who report into an office. Without face time with a manager, it's our work that must speak for us. There are downsides as well, but for me, it's the best situation I can imagine in which I can do meaningful work and still manage to keep my family running somewhat smoothly.

As with everything, it comes down to the individual. I'm sure there are those who take advantage of telecommuting, and there are definitely jobs that require an office presence. But there are also a large number of highly qualified, talented people who can do a job from home just as well if not better than they can in an office. So to put a big blanket policy in effect that takes away that option for everyone is ridiculous and disappointing, especially from a woman who should know better. Shame on her.

What do you think of Marissa Mayer's policy against employees working from home?

Boehner attacks Senate on sequestration

House Speaker John Boehner (Alex Wong/Getty Images)

With across-the-board federal spending cuts set to kick in on Friday, House Speaker John Boehner reiterated his plea for the Senate to pass an alternative to the sequester, calling on senators to get "off their ass."

"We should not have to move a third bill before the Senate gets off their ass and begins to do something," Boehner said on Tuesday. "It's time for the Senate to act."

Last year, the House passed two bills that would replace the $85 billion in automatic cuts known as the sequester, which are set to begin March 1. But the Republican-led chamber has declined to act since the new Congress convened this year, waiting for the Democrat-led Senate to pass its own replacement bill. The upper chamber is expected to vote on two competing bills before the March 1 deadline: A Democratic measure that achieves the same amount of deficit reduction with tax increases and a Republican version that contains only spending cuts.

Boehner added that he's prepared to keep the House in session this week to work with the Senate on a sequester alternative, but it's unlikely both chambers will be able to finish work on a bill by Friday.

HP finally parts with webOS in LG Electronics deal

(AP) ? Hewlett-Packard is selling its webOS software to South Korean electronics company LG Electronics, securing a new home for a technological orphan.

The deal announced Monday rids HP of the centerpiece of its ill-fated, $1.8 billion purchase of Palm Inc. three years ago.

HP used webOS as its springboard into the smartphone and tablet computer market in 2011, but quickly scrapped the mobile devices running on the software amid disappointing sales. With that retreat, Hewlett-Packard Co. stopped developing webOS for its own products and gave away the underlying technology as open-source software for programmers elsewhere to modify for their own needs.

LG Electronics has grander plans for webOS. Initially, the software will be melded into a new line of Internet-connected televisions from LG Electronics Inc. If those are successful, LG Electronics is considering selling household appliances and other devices that run on webOS in an attempt to create a so-called "smart" home. That's a concept that could appeal to a generation of consumers who wouldn't consider leaving their homes without their smartphones.

In a sign of its commitment to webOS, LG Electronics is also acquiring the team of engineers who had been working on the software for HP. The precise number of HP workers transferring to LG Electronics wasn't disclosed. The affected employees currently work in San Francisco and Palm's former Sunnyvale, Calif. headquarters, and will remain based in those cities, according to LG Electronics. It still hasn't been determined if LG Electronics will take control of the employees' current offices or move them to other locations in the same cities.

The opportunity to pick up a pool of talented software programmers and gain control over the core of webOS were the main reasons LG Electronics wanted to do the deal instead of simply relying on the free open-source project, LG Electronics spokesman John Taylor said.

Financial terms of the webOS sale weren't disclosed. It's unlikely that LG Electronics had to pay much, given that HP had already absorbed $1.6 billion in charges to account for the diminished value of Palm and other costs caused by its decision to stop making webOS devices.

HP, which is based in Palo Alto, is in the process of eliminating 29,000 jobs in an effort to cut costs amid a slump that has seen its revenue falling for the past 18 months. Through January, HP had jettisoned more than 15,000 of the jobs targeted in its streamlining.

HP is still holding on to some vestiges of its Palm acquisition. Among other things, HP retains ownership of other computing coding outside webOS, along with Palm's hardware and Palm's customer contracts. HP will also continue to employ former Palm employees who weren't involved in webOS and will continue to handle customer support for people who still use Palm products made in the past.

Besides getting webOS' source code and other key parts of the technology, LG Electronics will take over stewardship of the open-software project.

HP is jettisoning webOS just as the company is gearing up to introduce a new tablet that features a 7-inch screen and will sell for just $169. The upcoming device, called Slate 7, will run on the popular Android software made by Google Inc. It will supplement a more sophisticated and expensive tablet computer designed primarily for business users. That tablet runs on Windows 8, a recently released makeover of Microsoft's ubiquitous operating system.

HP's stock fell 13 cents to close at $19.07.

University of Alberta researchers have found a way to replace artificial preservatives in bread, making it tastier.

After loafing around in the lab analyzing strains of mould fermented in sourdough bread, Michael Ganzle, professor and Canada Research Chair in the University of Alberta Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science and fellow researchers were able to isolate natural compounds that can help keep bread fresh without changing its flavour. Preservatives added to store-bought bread are safe to eat and extend shelf life, but alter the flavour and give off a distinctive odour, said Ganzle.

The U of A research is the first to link the compoundshydroxy fatty acids to antifungal activity and to show that these compounds are formed in the production of fermented foods. "We were able to put known compounds into quite a new and exciting context," Gaenzle said.

The findings served up by the researchers also have the potential to replace or complement fungicides used in treating crop seeds such as barley, wheat and canola, and in protecting crops.

The study appears in the March 6, 2013 issue of Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

Samsung HomeSync Android TV box hands-on (video)

DNP Samsung HomeSync Android TV box handson video

Yesterday, Samsung announced the HomeSync Android TV box, and as expected that device is making an appearance here on the MWC 2013 show floor. Boxy media hubs can only be so attractive, but the HomeSync's grey-and-black aesthetic is sleek, and the brushed-metal finish will look familiar to anyone who's used a Sammy handset or laptop. There's a pair of USB 3.0 inputs, an HDMI port, optical audio and Ethernet connections on the rear, and buttons for power and settings on the front, but you can easily hide the console deep inside your home theater rig -- it can be controlled exclusively with a Android 4.2-equipped smartphone or tablet.

The Jelly Bean-powered HomeSync runs a 1.7GHz dual-core processor with 1TB of storage, and it supports up to eight accounts for uploading, downloading and sharing content between devices. Those with a Galaxy device will be able to wirelessly stream content to their TVs in full 1080p, and Play Store access is on board for downloading additional media. It worked well during our hands-on, but as with any WiFi-equipped streaming device, there was noticeable lag when mirroring the smartphone display on the connected HDTV. Still, assuming the price is right, we can see this being a solid component within any home theater setup. Take a closer look in our hands-on video after the break.

Peter Thiel Distributes Facebook Shares - Business Insider

We noticed something interesting in a recent SEC filing by Facebook board member Marc Andreessen.

Andreessen, a Facebook board member and cofounder of venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, reported receiving 15,344 Facebook shares from Founders Fund LP and Lembas LLC.

Those are both investment vehicles run by Peter Thiel, also a Facebook board member.?It is not clear from the filings whether those funds now retain any Facebook shares?only that they made a distribution to limited partners.

Thiel invested $500,000 for a 10% stake in Facebook in 2004, a prescient investment which ended up being worth billions. He sold some of his stake in private transactions over the years, and sold the majority of his stock last August.

A Facebook spokesperson could not comment on an investor's decision. A representative for Founders Fund did not respond to a request for comment Monday afternoon.

Since venture-capital funds are typically structured with a 10-year lifespan, it makes sense that Thiel would move to distribute Facebook shares to investors. Accel Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, and Benchmark Capital have made similar distributions in recent months as post-IPO lockup restrictions on sales have expired.

At this point, the only remaining lockups on Facebook investors apply to DST Group, the Russian investment firm run by Yuri Milner which invested $200 million in Facebook in 2009, eventually putting in a total of $500 million including sale purchases from early investors and employees. Its lockups expire in May.
