Polycom Inc., which has been vigilant in making video collaboration as ubiquitous as possible, has sought to eliminate the hurdles of universal video adoption. To that end, the company has unveiled the Polycom CloudAXIS extension for its RealPresence platform allowing Skype, Facebook and Google Talk to be launchpads for point-and-click video-conferencing capabilities.
On the Polycom side, an enterprise or solution provider can leverage the CloudAXIS suite to aggregate a global contact list from disparate video -conferencing users. This is takes place after the remote end-user installs a tiny Polycom client, which then links Skype, Facebook or Google Talk?s presence capabilities into CloudAXIS. Once the meeting coordinator sees logged-in participants via the CoudAxis portal, all users are sent a message via their service with a hyperlink to the CloudAXIS meeting. That specialized link then loads the entire video-conferencing platform inside the browser.
This essentially makes CloudAXIS the liaison for video collaboration and makes the solution platform agnostic. It doesn?t use Facebook, Skype or Google Talk protocols, it merely utilizes the most popular clients to quickly bring all participants to the same page.
Complementing that offering are several other major upgrades, including a complete overhaul to Polycom?s user interface (dubbed the ?Polycom UX?) and a new set of Polycom HD conference room video clients. Furthermore, Polycom is introducing an executive-level VisualEdge desktop client with a 27-inch screen. An update to Polycom?s desktop client software has also received an overhaul and new user interface design.
More pertinent to solution providers, Polycom launched its RealPresence Collaboration Server 800s, a virtualized platform that delivers the same experience and capabilities as physical server editions, including Polycom?s latest open scalable video coding software.
According to Polycom officials, enterprises and smaller businesses that are moderately outfitted with standard video capabilities can be up and running with a minimum of effort within the company?s internal network. Service providers will glean considerable stickiness through the platform, since they can still provide value-added services to CloudAXIS. Specialized applications, recording capabilities, digital white board and other specialized tools (read: vertical market integration) can make CloudAXIS a solid platform to build up and out.
MSPs, VARs and ISVs that are heavily into specialization will enjoy the same level of API support for third-party apps with CloudAXIS on Polycom RealPresence, including scheduling, directory management and monitoring, and, of course, billing. But more importantly, the broad connectivity capabilities of this platform help Polycom providers deliver video-as-a-service plus video-collaboration-as-a-service, with almost no overhead needed. The platform is highly scalable and can grow with a customer?s needs to maintain a solid revenue stream for the provider.
Polycom?s timing with this solution set appears well placed. As?more non-traditional operating systems become commonplace in the enterprise, a sweeping solution set like this one can quickly enable businesses that thought unified video collaboration was a pipe dream without major investments.
But even if solution providers are not big on customizable solutions, there?s considerable peripheral opportunity for those that need a jump-start in the video collaboration space. And of course, solution providers could use the platform as an on-ramp?to additional cloud-based services. With the potential for an easy sell and little to implement by partners, Polycom?s approach may even side-swipe rivals, like Cisco?Systems Inc. and LifeSize Communications Inc.
This October surprise for Polycom suggests the company has a bullish attitude behind the platform. But before anyone gets too excited, Polycom will have to deliver on the promise of CloudAXIS. August 2012 predictions?by Gartner attest the cloud will accelerate video-based collaboration more than any other collaboration in the cloud, so Polycom?s CloudAXIS efforts could be the first steps to a very video-centric future.
But we?ll just have to wait. The whole solution set goes live for enterprises and solution providers in the first quarter of next year.
