NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? Yale's women's squash team will kick off the Ivy League stretch of its schedule this Saturday at No. 6 Cornell, then Sunday at No. 14 Columbia.
Cornell is currently 4-0, including dominant 9-0 wins over No. 10 Williams, No. 16 Hamilton and Columbia.? The fourth Cornell victory came 5-4 over No. 7 Stanford.? Big Red is led by No. 9 Danielle Letourneau, who is followed closely in the rankings by No. 20 Jaime Laird and No. 26 Jesse Pacheco.? Also ranked for Cornell are Rachel Au, at No. 63, and No. 71 Maggie Remsen.?
No. 14 Columbia has only played one match, the 9-0 defeat against Cornell back at the beginning of December.? The Lions have only two players ranked in the top 100.? Katie Quan is ranked No. 60, while Alisha Maity is No. 77.
In last season's final Ivy League standings, Yale was 6-1, while Columbia was 0-7 and Cornell was 3-4.?
The No. 2-ranked Bulldogs return two of the nation's best players in No. 2 Mille Tomlinson and No. 6 Kim Hay, both juniors.? They are joined in the rankings by No. 24 Gwen Tilghman, a junior, No. 28 Katie Ballaine, a senior and the team's captain, and sophomore Shihui Mao, ranked No. 38, No. 40-ranked junior Lilly Fast, and No. 41-ranked sophomore Issey Norman-Ross.? Sophomore Anna Harrison is ranked No. 82, rounding out the Bulldog presence in the rankings.?
At this early juncture in the squash season, only Cornell and Harvard have won games in the Ivy League, but after this weekend's matches the shape of the league will start to shake out.? Especially interesting will be the battle for the top spot.? In recent memory, the Bulldogs and Crimson have been by far the two best teams, but No. 5 Penn will look to get into the mix after winning the Ivy Scrimmages this year.? Other teams like No. 4 Princeton and Cornell also have designs on the league title.
