BELOIT (WIFR) -- The Beloit Police Department has announced that K-9 Nick will retire May 12, 2013.
"The department and the community are grateful for the years of service K-9 Nick has provided to the Beloit Police Officers who depended on him to help with their daily policing duties," said Chief Jacobs.
Nick will retire to his new life with his handler, Officer Brian Daugherty and family.
K-9 Nick began his tour of duty September 6, 2006. Nick and Officer Daugherty worked tirelessly together since those early years, mostly on second shift, doing what this multi task K-9 was trained to do. Nick was used extensively over the years for drug interdiction work, searches of vehicles and buildings, and tracking.
Nick?s retirement will occur during National Police Week, which is May 12th through May 18th, 2013, when we honor past and present officers for their service.
?The K-9 program, the community has allowed us to have since 1985, is a valuable tool to law enforcement? said Chief Jacobs. We will begin considering the future of the program balancing resources with the community needs.
Sheriff Bob Spoden from the Rock County Sheriff?s Office and Chief David Moore from the Janesville Police Department have offered their K-9 resources should they be required.
